Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has become the third Mexican to win a Golden Globe for Best Director last Sunday night, with his film, " The Shape of Water ", a love story between a deaf and mute woman and a marine creature kept in a lab.
“Since childhood, I've been faithful to monsters, patron saints of imperfection which allow us to contemplate the possibility of failure and move on,” said Del Toro during his acceptance speech.
After kindly requesting to lower the mood music, the filmmaker talked about the highlights of his 25-year career “handcrafting very strange little tales” and thanked the women who supported him in this project, such as screenwriter Vanessa Taylor and actresses Sally Hawkins and Octavia Spencer .
“The Shape of Water” was nominated for 7 Golden Globe Awards and won Best Director and Best Original Score .
Alfonso Cuarón was the first Mexican to win the award in 2013, with his film “Gravity,” while Alejandro González Iñárritu was the second in 2015 for “The Revenant.”
