Mexico's Ministry of Health has declared diabetes a public health emergency in Mexico. When emphasizing the importance of fighting the disease in Mexico, Pablo Kuri, Deputy Minister of Health Promotion and Prevention, emphasized that in 2015, 98,450 died in the country as a result of diabetes-related illnesses. Overweight, obesity and diabetes are the number one problem in Mexico that the government must address, he said.
Declaring a public emergency will allow officials to reinforce preventative and control measures for diabetes. At a press conference, Pablo Kuri said that it's not only the government's responsibility to tackle this problem, but also the private sector's and the public's responsibility.
He concluded by saying that he will continue to show his commitment to working on the National Strategy for the Prevention and Control of Obesity, and he urged citizens not to accept the disease as the new normal.
