The Archdiocese of Mexico said that the initiative to give same-sex couples the right to adopt children is "deeply immoral and unjust", because it turns children into objects.
It added that children are people, not pets, and demanded the immediate withdrawal of the proposal made by President Enrique Peña Nieto to reform the Civil Code.
In its weekly editorial “Desde la fe” the Archdiocese said that its consequences "would be very serious" because children need to grow in “healthy and balanced environments” and that heterosexual couples should be the ones getting the opportunity to adopt a child.
It added that the reform seems to privilege homosexual whims to get a child, as if they were a trophy of gender ideologies.
