Around 50% of national projects to compete at the next International Film Festival of Morelia (FICM) were directed by women.

A total of 44 female directors have created both short and long feature films for the fiction, documentary, and animation categories. The competition will be held at the end of October, featuring 92 films .

In the long feature and fiction categories only, five out of the 11 projects chosen were made by women: The Chambermaid, by Lila Avilés; “La caótica vida de Mada Kadic,” by Marta Hernaiz; The Lodgers, by Iria Gómez; “Las niñas bien,” by Alejandra Márquez, and “Asfixia,” by Kenya Márquez .

Women are also growing in number at the documentary category, with six out of ten nominees: “A morir a los desiertos,” by Marta Ferrer; “Lejos del sentido,” by Olivia Luengas; “M,” directed by Eva Villaseñor; “El sembrador,” by Melissa Elizondo; “The best thing you can do with your life,” by Zita Erfa, and “Una corriente salvaje,” by Nuria Ibáñez .

Daniela Michel

, director of FICM reminded the press that, in 2017 , only 34 women filmmakers had participated in the national competition.

“Now that number has grown due to the quality of the films, which have great relevance in our time,” Michel stated.

“We always end up cross-eyed from watching so many films,” stated the director jokingly when referring to the amount of movies participating at the selection.

“There is a broad variety of subjects and we didn’t want to focus on one of them, since it would bias our judgment. What we want is a diverse festival, and directors with a specific curriculum who are starting in their career as filmmakers. We have films from Guadalajara , Monterrey , and many other places in Mexico ,” she added.

The festival will pay homage to cinematographer Alex Phillips , who was responsible for the visual lock of over 200 Mexican films, including “¡Ay Jalisco no te rajes!,” “Doña Bárbara,” and “El castillo de la pureza.”

“There will be a photo gallery and a special program about Alex Figueroa ,” stated the director.

For the time being, the festival has not yet revealed the names of this year’s international guests, but it revealed that a number of Mexican horror films will also be presented to be considered for Feratum , a specialized horror festival.
