A group of 30 carpet artisans from Uriangato, Guanajuato coordinated 300 volunteers to create the Ephemeral Art Monumental Carpet at Mexico City’s main square known as Zócalo that represents “ Xico ,” a dog that is almost 3,200 square meters and that is currently considered the largest carpet of its kind.
The carpet required a total of 18 tonnes of natural and recycled materials like sawdust , salt , corn leaves, cobs, and grains, and pine branches.
“This work is an initiative that consists of creating the ephemeral art of Uriangato’s carpet artisans,” said Adriana Camarena , director of Guanajuato’s Culture Institute .

She added that the monumental carpet at Zócalo was planned after the creation presented by the artisans at the Brussels’ main square in 2018 .
“It will be the largest carpet built until now, with an extension of 3,200 square meters, while the one in Brussels was of 1,800 square meters ,” she said.
For the creation of the carpet, 30 artisans moved from Uriangato to Mexico City to team up with 300 volunteers from Mexico City’s Youth Institute (Injuve) and the Integral Development for the Families (DIF) .

The carpet was started on February 3 and concluded on February 6 at Mexico City’s Zócalo where it will remain until next Wednesday, February 12 .
The project, said Adriana Camarena, emerged after an invitation received by Guanajuato and the Eighth Night Association , which gathers artisans, upholsterers, and carpet artisans from Uriangato, by Mexico City’s Culture Ministry and Cristina Pineda from Pineda Covalin .
