Through a mega screen to be installed in Mexico’s Zócalo ( main square ), 30 of the FIFA World Cup ’s soccer matches will be broadcast and accessible to all.
As part of the “ Zocafut ” project, which will be held at the Constitución plaza from 14 June to 15 July ( from 10:00 to 18:00 hours ), attendees will be able to participate in the speed challenge, the goalie challenge, foot-tennis, and foosball. There will also be a museum where ten giant soccer balls from the Ball Parade will be exhibited, as well as three soccer balls with Huichol ornamentation.
The Sports Institute of Mexico City (INDEPORTE) will install several screens for fans to enjoy Mexico’s soccer matches. These screens will be located at Iztapalapa’s Macro Square , the Hermanos Soler forum at the De los Venados park ; Alameda Sur, Coyoacán , as well as the main esplanades from the Iztacalco, Miguel Hidalgo, and Venustiano Carranza delegations.
The World Cup’s opening game ( Russia vs. Saudi Arabia ) will be broadcast tomorrow. Mexico’s National Team will play its first game on June 17 against Germany.
On July 1 , the day of Mexico’s presidential election , there will be two games at the World Cup’s quarterfinals . There has been some controversy about the use of Mexico City ’s main square for the broadcast of the games. The candidate for the “ Together We Will Make History ” coalition, Andrés Manuel López Obrador , suggested that the city government had denied the public space for the close of his campaign.
In response, the head of government , José Ramón Amieva , said that the use of that space had also been denied to other political parties since the installation of the mega screen was already programmed.
