The whale watching season arrives in Mexico's Pacific Coast and the Gulf of California ( Sea of Cortez ) from December to March, and it is one of the great attractions of Baja California Sur.
Every year, California gray whales migrate from the cold Bering Sea near Alaska to the warm Pacific waters off the coast of Mexico.
There are several whale watching spaces open to the public, such as Puerto López Mateos , Puerto San Carlos at Magdalena Bay , Ojo de Liebre Lagoon , and San Ignacio Lagoon , among others.
Both Ojo de Liebre Lagoon and San Ignacio Lagoon are gray whale sanctuaries that belong to the Whale Sanctuary of El Vizcaino , Mexico's largest protected area and one of the largest in Latin America.
The Whale Sanctuary of El Vizcaino was declared Natural World Heritage in 2007 as it was recognized as the world's most important place for the reproduction of the once-endangered gray whale.
There are gray whale sanctuary tours to enjoy one of the most amazing shows nature has to offer.
