U.S. Secretary of the State, Rex Tillerson , said in a conversation with Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Luis Videgaray , that the United States is ready to provide aid to Mexico after the damages caused by the earthquake and hurricane Katia.
Tillerson spoke with Videgaray on Monday night and offered his condolences for the lives lost in the 8.2 magnitude earthquake which struck its southern neighbor last week, as well as for the devastation caused by Hurricane Katia in the eastern states of Veracruz and Puebla .
The statement released by the Department of State says that “the U.S. Government stands ready to assist our neighbors in Mexico during this difficult time.”
Mexico initially offered aid to the victims of Hurricane Harvey , which struck the American state of Texas in August, but after the quake, the Mexican Government had to rescind the offer.
Tillerson and Videgaray also discussed “other issues of bilateral and regional importance” including the combat of transnational criminal organizations.
The Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs is currently visiting the state of California and is scheduled to have a work meeting this Wednesday in Washington D.C.
