The fourth round of talks in the North American Free Trade Agreement ( NAFTA ) renegotiation begins this week in Washington and Thomas Donohue , Head of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce , expressed concern since it appear the negotiations have been designed to fail.
Thus, if the U.S. administration chooses to leave NAFTA, U.S. companies of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce will file a court challenge.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve reached a critical moment. And the chamber has had no choice but ring the alarm bells ,” Donohue said.
The Head of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce said that the recent proposals, such as the five-year rule , the rules of origin , dispute resolutions , and government procurement , "could spoil the treaty."
Thomas Donohue who visits Mexico to participate in the ninth round of the Mexico-United States Dialogue and in an American Chamber Mexico ( Amcha ) event, strongly believes that the U.S. administration cannot think of withdrawing as a negotiation tactic.
Donohue mentioned that the private initiative has taken several cases against the U.S. government to court and they will certainly do the same if the departure of its country from NAFTA is announced.
