In order to keep up with the accelerated increase in the commerce and use of electronic games, the University of Guadalajara (UdeG) announced the creation of a new Videogame Engineering degree .
The academic secretary of the Los Lagos University Center , Rebeca Vanesa García Corzo , stressed that the videogame industry registered revenues of more than USD$1 billion in Mexico in 2018, making it the 12th largest videogame market at the global scale and the largest in Latin America.
"The videogame market is led by video games for mobile devices, with 42 percent; followed by video games for consoles, with 31 percent, and for computers –both downloadable items and online games-, with 27 percent,"
she stated.
Both the Lagos and the Coast Univesity Centers will offer the new degree from August 2019 .
In a statement, the UdeG reported that the degree is part of a new trend of creative economies and adds to the university’s academic offer.
Those who pursue this career will not only be dedicated to designing and programming a complete videogame, but also to design virtual environments in 2D and 3D focused on research, innovation and entrepreneurship, and software with medical applications.
Graduates will have the ability to design, program, and publish a complete game, as well as monitoring and creating environments, systems, and interactive virtual experiences, with training linked to research, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Video games and virtual reality simulations are part of a growing industry. The technology used for the development of videogames can also be applied in other areas such as medicine, education, and the automotive industry, the academics explained.
