UNAM wins second place at RoboCup 2018

Students from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) have won the second place in both the OPL Service Robot category with “Justina”, and the DSPL Toyota Service Robot categories with “Takeshi”, at the annual robotics competition RoboCup 2018 held this year in Montreal, Canada.

Both teams are formed by members of the biorobotics laboratory of the Department of Engineering, led by researcher Jesús Savage.

RoboCup 2018

is a competition which seeks to promote the development of new robotic technologies and this year there were 5,000 robots built by 4,000 college students from 35 countries.

The competition has several categories, including rescue, virtual simulation, and football matches.

Professor Savage UNAM students have participated in RoboCup since 2006. And in 2007, they won a third and fourth place, together with an award for best voice recognition and natural language system.

RoboCup was established in 1997 with the goal of building a team of autonomous robots capable of winning a football match against the World Cup's champions by 2050 and continue advancing robotics .
