Despite the travel warnings issued by the US government and the recent earthquakes , an 8.2-magnitude quake on Thursday, September 7 , followed by a 7.1-magnitude quake on Tuesday, September 19 , tourism forecasts in Mexico are still intact according to Pablo Azcárraga , President of the National Business Tourism Council ( Consejo Nacional Empresarial Turístico abbreviated CNET ).
"We estimate 37 million international tourists and about USD$22 billion in revenue," he said at the 17th International Tourism Congress of CNET.
Pablo Azcárraga said that the CNET met with Roberta Jacobson , US ambassador to Mexico, in the hopes of the modification of some of the travel warnings issued by the US government regarding several Mexican destinations.
"Travel warnings without solid foundations and disproportionate judgment may affect the tourist flow to major destinations in Mexico," he emphasized.
Pablo Azcárraga assured that Mexico has the opportunity to develop different tourism, in particular, cultural tourism to increase the country's economic income as well.
Regarding the devastating earthquakes, the CNET proposed to create a fiscal mechanism that allows large companies to " adopt towns " that have been affected by these natural phenomena, in order to improve the infrastructure and living conditions of the population there while turning the affected towns into tourist attractions.
