On Sunday, thousands marched through Mexico City to demand the resignation of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in the first major protest against the Mexican President in the capital since he took office five months ago.
The majority of the protesters were dressed in white and marched down the capital’s main avenue , with many chanting: “ AMLO , out!” using the president’s nickname.
Some covered their mouths with tape, on which they had written: “ AMLO resign.” Others waved signs bearing slogans including “ Mexico isn’t yours” and “You’re not Robin Hood.”
The protest was sparked by some of his early decisions , including canceling a partially built USD $13 billion Mexico City airport.
He has also struggled to curb the rampant violence among warring drug cartels , fuel theft , and crime .
“Security problems more than anything (...) and more and more, there are bigger problems for the youth,” said Enrique Araujo , a retired Pemex employee at the march, listing his concerns. “In two or three years, this country is going to collapse .”
At least 6,000 people participated in the demonstration , authorities said.
Many expressed discontent with López Obrador ’s rhetoric against his detractors and the opposition , for example, he constantly uses the word “fifi” for the people he describes as the conservative elite.
“I feel like he’s generating a big divide in our beautiful country with these derogatory terms that he uses,” said Mónica Elizondo, a housewife. “We’re all Mexicans , and we all deserve to be heard.”
The largest number of protestors marched in Mexico City , they were around 6,000 according to Reuters. Gabriel Quadri, a former Presidential candidate was also present.
In other cities, people also took the streets. Around 500 people in Nuevo León joined the protest and demanded that the President halts violence and doesn't allow Central American migrants in the country.
In Querétaro , over 2,000 people marched against the President in silence.
In Yucatán , 300 people demonstrated, they criticized Andrés Manuel López Obrador 's policies and actions.
At least 500 people in San Luis Potosí protested in silence, as they consider that the President doesn't listen to civil society and forgets about the 60 million Mexicans that didn't vote for him.
In Guanajuato , 2,000 citizens, led by former President Vicente Fox , joined the National Peaceful March for Peace and protested against the decisions made by the federal government , which they consider affect women , children , health , economy , and policies that divide society .
In Tamaulipas , hundreds of people joined the silent demonstration .
Around 1,500 people in Guadalajara protested the policies implemented by Andrés Manuel López Obrador .
After the protests, Communications and Transports Minister Javier Jiménez Espriú posted a message on Twitter , mocking the number of protesters .
