Mining explorers have confirmed the existence of a chamber of around 50 feet in diameter under the Pyramid of the Moon in Teotihuacán , as well as a tunnel that opens out onto the south of the Square of the Moon .
Through a press release, the exploration team disclosed the details of the operation conducted by researchers from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) , who indicated that the space might have been used for religious purposes.
Doctor Verónica Ortega, director of the Integral Conservation Project for the Square of the Moon
, indicated that the investigation revolved around the ritual space dedicated to the underworld that allegedly made the ancient city sacred.
Ortega stated that large buildings built for offerings constitute the sacred core of the ancient city of Teotihuacán , “which is why people consider it to be the cradle of civilization. What can be found in its interior could lead us to unravel the relationship between this city and other regions of Mesoamerica.”
The investigator claimed that the exploration of the secret chamber would allow anthropologists to know whether the city’s main buildings were related to specific regions in Mesoamerica, given that marine materials were found within the Temple of the Feathered Serpent , leading experts to believe that the archaeological site could have been linked to the Caribbean and the Gulf .
The finding came as a result of an electrical resistivity study made around the Pyramid of the Moon in June, 2017 .
