Last December, with the arrival of Andrés Manuel López Obrador to the presidency , it seemed like the executive branch and the le gislative power were getting close once again, after two decades of disagreements.
For the second time in this century, a President took office in a civilized manner. The opposition protested at San Lázaro . For example, PAN members displayed signs with messages against Nicolás Maduro 's visit, but the ceremony carried out without any mishap.
The last time a ceremony, without any incident, took place was on December 1, 2000, when Vicente Fox took office. In 2006, Felipe Calderón was inaugurated in a tortuous and unconventional way, by entering San Lázaro through the back door, since the opposition had taken the tribune. In 2012, Enrique Peña Nieto took office in the midst of a shielded Congress and violent protests in the streets.
In this administration, the signs seemed to indicate that there would be communication between both branches...until yesterday. The Energy Minister and the Finance Minister had been called to appear before Congress , as well as the head of Pemex and the Profeco , but they canceled their appearance at the last minute. The legislators found out 20 minutes before the meeting started.
The presence of the public servants was requested so they would explain the fuel shortage in the country's central region and what is the strategy used to fight f uel theft.
The practices of calling on officials to testify before the authorities are one of the most common and characteristic of every democratic and republican regime. The legislative branch summons those governing to learn about the measures implemented in the face of situations that affect the population.
The absent public servants lost their opportunity to publicly explain the fuel shortage, an issue that has affected a large part of society and at the same time, they were discourteous, to say the least, towards other government branches .
In the midst of a measure that has polarized society , total transparency about the actions taken is required, and no one can provide more precise information than those leading the departments involved.
Accountability
is a characteristic present in every democracy but unfortunately, this time it wasn't a priority.
