The United States ambassador to Mexico, Roberta Jacobson , has thanked “this beautiful country and its people” upon retirement from the diplomatic position she had held for two years.
On her twitter account that will henceforth change its name to @USAAmbMex , to be used by future ambassadors to Mexico, the diplomat expressed that she believes more than ever in the fortitude of the bilateral relationship between Mexico and the United States: "I have said it before and I maintain that representing the United States in Mexico has been the job of my life. I thank this beautiful country and its people. I expect a promising future for Mexico. These two years have been wonderful, I leave my heart with you!."
“This is not a goodbye, but a ‘see you soon'. Today, I believe more than ever in the strength of MX-US relations . The bilateral relationship continues, and this account will change its name to @USAmbMex, an institutional account for future embassadors in Mexico. Follow me at @Jacobson_RS. See you soon!" Jacobson tweeted moments before boarding a commercial flight to the USA, in the company of her husband, Jonathan Jacobson .
At a press release, the US embassy reminded that, after three decades of working in the Department of State , most of which were devoted to affairs related to the American continent, Jacobson is officially retiring from the US Foreign Service .
Jacobson announced her resignation on 1st March last, at a moment of increasing tension for the bilateral relationship, particularly on the subject of migration and trading, since Mexico, the USA, and Canada are currently involved in the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) .
In June 2015, Jacobson was nominated by the President Barack Obama to be the ambassador of Mexico, a position that had never been held by a woman, and the US Senate confirmed her post on April 2016. Shortly after, she arrived in the Latin American country.
