President López Obrador ignores Jorge Arganis

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador issued the first instructions to regain control of ports during his visit to Salina Cruz, Oaxaca. However, the most notorious announcement was the appointment of the new coordinator of the Ports and Merchant Navy department under the Communications and Transportation Ministry. Moreover, it was interesting how the President announced his decision: “Today, I’m going to tell Communications Minister Jorge Arganis to appoint Rosa Icela Rodríguez to the General Coordination of Ports and Merchant Navy.” Sources said that although it is common for the President to appoint officials, it is uncommon for the President to show that he is the one making these decisions. Jorge Arganis was appointed to the SCT less than a week ago and the President is already ignoring him.

Manzanillo is a huge challenge

President López Obrador accepted a proposal made by Navy Minister José Rafael Ojeda Durán, who suggested Admiral Salvador Gómez Meillón manages the port administration (API) in Manzanillo, Colima. Meanwhile, Admiral Jorge Luis Cruz Ballardo will administrate the API in Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán. Admiral Cruz Ballardo held the same position years ago when he was appointed by former President Enrique Peña Nieto. The administration of the port is quite important since it is besieged by criminal organizations. However, Admiral Salvador Gómez Meillón will face the biggest challenge since Manzanillo is not only the biggest port in the country but also the place where fentanyl arrives. This is one of the reasons why homicides have increased in Colima.

This PRI diplomat is back

After a year, the world of diplomacy welcomed Carlos Jiménez Macías (PRI) back, who will work in the Mexican embassy in Spain to oversee the political relationship between Mexico and Spain. Jiménez Macías was the Mexican consul in Chicago until November 2018 but he resigned, like many other ambassadors and consuls who weren’t part of the Foreign Mexican Service. After his resignation, Carlos Jiménez Macías attended PRI events; however, he is now working for the current administration.

Morena lawmaker refused to pay rent

A courthouse in Ciudad Valles ordered Morena lawmaker Ricardo del Sol Estrada’s salary to be seized because he owes 18 months' worth of rent. Insiders said the Morena lawmaker owes MXN 156,000 after failing to pay rent for a year and a half. Property owners filed the lawsuit in 2017. Ricardo del Sol Estrada filed several writs of Amparo and argued that he didn’t have any properties that could be seized to pay his debt; therefore, a judge decided to take 30% off his salary every month until he paid his debt. Sources said the federal lawmaker tried to intimidate the landlords by saying that he was friends with the President.
