This morning, hundreds of Mexican mothers with missing children gathered at the Monument to the Mother in Mexico City to march to the Angel of Independence , on the iconic Reforma avenue.
With the slogan “They took them alive, we want them alive,” ( Vivos se los llevaron, vivos los queremos ) the mothers marched on Reforma Avenue calling on the government to take action and find their missing children.
More than 40,000 people are listed as missing in Mexico, many from the years since former President Felipe Calderón launched a military campaign against drug cartels in 2006, according to the country’s National Search Commission (CNB) .
Civil organizations from the State of Mexico, Veracruz, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas , and other states arrived in the country’s capital to protest.
Both national and international organizations such as the UN are accompanying the mothers in their demonstration.
Similar protests are now taking place in at least half of the country’s states, according to those participating in the event.
The mothers of missing persons are demanding that members of the new federal administration, through the National Search Commission, help in the search of those that have gone missing.
