Earlier this week, more than a dozen art pieces by some of the most outstanding modern painters in Mexico were auctioned by three auction houses dominating the high end of the art market.
The Mexican modern art pieces in auction belonged to the Latin American art auctions at Christie's , Sotheby's , and Phillips that have already been established as a tradition in New York .
In the Latin American sale, among the top sales of the genre were Tamayo (1899-1991), Diego Rivera (1886-1957), Raúl Anguiano (1915-2006), María Izquierdo (1902-1955), Francisco Toledo (1940), Leonora Carrington (1917-2011), Juan Soriano (1920-2006), Mathias Goeritz (1915-1990), Pedro Friederberg (1936), David Alfaro Siqueiros (1896-1974), Olga Costa (1913-1994), Alfredo Ramos Martínez (1871-1976), Roberto Montenegro (1885-1968), Rodolfo Nieto (1936-1985), and Pía Camil (1980).
The highest of the Tamayo lots was Personaje en un interior ( 1988 ), a painting that portrays the artist's extraordinary virtuosity in the treatment of color and texture, sold for USD$ 1,935,000 at Sotheby's.
Sotheby's Latin America: Modern Art and Latin America: Contemporary art sales performed well, realized USD$ 21,047,375 with more than a two hundred art pieces auctioned.
Phillips auctioned 85 Latin American art pieces which realized USD$ 6,000,000 overall.
"Our final Latin America sale has seen a renewed confidence in the market. Bidders in North America, South America and Europe bidded for extraordinary works of art, "said Kaeli Dean, Head of Sale at Philips, adding that the interest of collectors for modern art in Latin America will continue during 2018 for sure.
