In their last report regarding world mobility, the famous online portal Statista showed a rapid growth of mobility platforms and services in Mexico . According to the portal, this sector has grown at a rate of 22% last year, with a total sales value of 489 million dollars .
However, this figure only takes into account transport-hailing services such as Uber, Cabify, and Easy Taxi , which have online platforms that connect drivers with passengers in need of private or public transport.
While it is estimated that there are 10.5 million people in the country that use this type of service, Statista predicts that the number will grow to 16 million by 2022 , which will increase the sales value of the ride-hailing market 800 million dollars .
Although these numbers are nothing short of impressive, they pale in comparison to China’s mobility market , where it is estimated that total ride-hailing sales will be of 25,000 million dollars in 2018 . This explains why companies such as Didi Chuxing, founded in 2012 , have shown an exponential growth in China and will now seek to open new markets in Mexico.
There is no doubt that these services are here to stay and add to the more conventional transport offers. New generations are growing accustomed to requesting transport through their smartphones. In fact, Statista pointed out that 60% of users were between the age of 18 and 34 last year, which is why millennials are thought to be agents of market change in this sector.
Of course ride-hailing services are only a part of the mobility market’s broad repertoire, which includes car-sharing, which allows users to access a list of vehicles to rent for a few hours or minutes.
Mobility under demand offers solutions that separate the concept of use and vehicle property. This helps in increasing the use of vehicles when compered to the traditional model of property. Before the exponential growth of this industry, new services and alternatives -including bicycles- are expected to develop as well. Several bicycle sharing services have made a path for themselves in Mexico City with positive results.
