On Monday, Mexico's Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray attended the Second Ministerial Meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States ( CELAC ) – China forum in Santiago, Chile.
On Twitter, Mexico's Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote in Spanish: "The Ministerial meeting at theCELAC-China Forum, in Santiago, Chile, seeks to promote the development, innovation, and cooperation of the nations that make up this region."
According to a statement issued by Mexico's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), Videgaray highlighted Mexico's commitment to combating climate change, the ongoing progress on the 2030 Agenda, and multilateral agreements.
"Without a doubt, this ministerial meeting is very important and it is something that should make us all happy. It is cause for hope and optimism because our region is taking tangible, concrete steps to create closer ties with China, a big and important nation that we admire and that has decided to work more closely with Latin America and the Caribbean," Mexico's Foreign Minister assured at the forum.
Social welfare, innovation, economic growth, and sustainable development in Latin America, the Caribbean, and China were key points addressed at the forum while the Santiago Declaration , seeking to expand and deepen mutual cooperation, was adopted at the meeting. It comprises the 2019-2021 Joint Action Plan for CELAC-China Cooperation as an extension of the 2015-2019 plan .
Luis Videgaray held meetings with the Foreign Ministers of Bolivia , Chile , China , Cuba , the Dominican Republic , Peru , and Venezuela .
“Trade and investment between China and the region have deepened in recent years. Currently, the Latin American and Caribbean region is the second most important destination for Chinese investments after Asia, while China has become the region's second-largest trading partner,” concluded the statement.
