Mexico’s Health Ministry (SSA) announced it will purchase 700,000 PCR tests to detect the COVID-19 coronavirus, which will be used from October through March during the w inter season and before the end of the first wave of the pandemic; they are expected to arrive within 30 to 45 days.
The head of Epidemiology, José Luis Alomía Zegarra, revealed that the purchase of COVID-19 tests has continued in the country even though there are still 30,000 available from the 300,000 tests purchased from China. On August 2, the number of Mexicans who have been tested for COVID-19 surpassed a million.
“Considering that the COVID-19 pandemic would still last in Mexico, and knowing the winter season is about to arrive, beginning in October and lasting through March, as long as the first COVID-19 wave end, there will be a new purchase of approximately 700,000 tests that will be required in addition to the ones still currently available,” he said.
“They are not all kept in a single place; they are distributed in the national public health network and the laboratories working on epidemiological surveillance. There will be as many tests as needed to study cases.”
