The Digital Library of Ibero-American Heritage will now include the first Mexican digital collection , with works from the National Library of Mexico (BNM) and more than 800 printed works of New Spanish authorship which will account for a part of the printshop catalog of the Viceroyship in New Spain .
Although Mexico had not been a part of the Digital Library until now, the number of visitors from this country is one of the highest in Latin America , according to a press release from the National Library of Spain .
The addition was undertaken through the rehabilitation of the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB) since the month of June of the present year. The organization expects that the presence of BNM’s digital collection will continue to grow during the next few months.
The theme and classification of the new Mexican collection is diverse. There are works that deal with religious, economic, and political subjects that rose during New Spain’s colonial administration, and even from the time of the independence movements between the years 1808 and 1821 .
At the time of its creation in 1867 , Mexico’s National Library had an important collection of over 100,000 volumes that have now risen to over 1.3 million . Some of their collections have even become part of UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register .
