Mexico
's importance in the world stage was confirmed when it became one of the 51 countries that founded the United Nations in 1945. It's been 74 years since this organization has worked to ensure dialogue and pacific solutions for international problems : peace , the respect of human rights , climate change , sustainable development , humanitarian and health crises , among other issues.
In the UN , the Security Council is in charge of world peace . It is formed by 15 members but only five of them are permanent; the other 10 change over time. In the last 74 years, Mexico has been a member of the UN Security Council four times: 1946, 1980-1981, 2002-2003, and 2009-2010.
For the third in the last 19 years, Mexico has been nominated to become a member of the UN Security Council ; 33 Latin American and Caribbean nations have announced that they will vote for Mexico .
This is no easy task since the organization imposes embargos and economic sanctions , or authorizes the use of force . Also, the UN members are compelled to comply with the decisions.
Mexico
has earned a place in the world stage because of its economic importance . Returning to the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021 period should be used to strengthen its diplomatic credibility and promote world peace and become the voice of Latin America , one of the regions that require the presence of international organisms.
The current government's plan to transform the country should not neglect Mexico's participation in key positions inside international bodies . The country is facing serious issues that could be solved if it reaches global agreements to contain them, for example, undocumented migration, the decriminalization of drugs , and the fight against corruption .
The world should know that Mexico has two diplomatic principles : peace and the respect of international laws . Whether in the United Nations or in other organizations, Mexico's voice should be heard.
