Mexican poet José Vicente Anaya
, recognized as one of the most important figures of his generation, passed away on Saturday early morning after being hospitalized for several months due to health issues, as informed by his family and Malpaís Ediciones, in a statement posted on social media.
The publishing house added that recently, the also critic and editor had to undergo surgery, an angioplasty, to unclog the arteries in his legs due to calcifications that blocked the blood flow.
According to the statement, his daughter, Andrea Anaya, informed: “We left the hospital and went home to rest; he passed away peacefully in his exact address that are dreams.”
In recent weeks, several friends, publishing houses, and literary projects teamed up to raise funds for the poet’s family, for they said his medical situation required several treatments, check-ups, and surgeries due to his hospitalization.

Anaya
was born in Chihuahua in 1947. In addition to being a poet , he was also a translator and cultural journalist. He published over 30 books and was part of the poetical movement known as Infrarrealism. Moreover, he was an outstanding scholar of American poetry, mainly the Beat Generation, as well as of Chinese and Japanese literature.
He translated books by Henry Miller, Alen Ginsberg, Margaret Randall, Marge Piercy, Gregory Corso, Antonin Artaud, Carl Sandburg, and Jim Morrison. His poetry has been translated into English, French, Italian, Arabic, and Portuguese.
