Mexican illustrator wins Margaret Flockton Award in Australia

Mexican illustrator Edmundo Saavedra

has just won the 2019 Margaret Flockton Award , which focuses on contemporary scientific botanical illustration, with an illustration called "Monstera deliciosa."

Illustrators from around the world submitted their scientifically accurate drawings for this prestigious annual competition, organized by the Royal Botanic Garden in Sydney .

The illustrations are highly detailed black and white drawings made mainly with pen and ink, though some are made with pencil or digital devices. The images are accompanied by the taxonomic description of the plant, highlighting the distinctive characteristics of the species.

The second place went to Alastair Robinson, from Australia, with his "Cephalotus follicularis."

Other works that were highly commended were those of Alice Tangerini, from the United States , with "Piper sotobosquense," Loh XiangYun, from Singapore , with "Wrightia laevis,” and Luisa Crisostomo, from Portugal , with "Arbutus unedo."

The works will be on display at the Joseph Maiden Theater, Royal Botanic Garden Sydney , until Sunday, April 14 , according to its website.

The "Margaret Flockton" award commemorates the artists’ contribution to Australian scientific botanical illustration, and is sponsored by the Maple Brown Family and the Foundation and Friends of the Botanic Gardens.
