Students
from the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) won the first place at the Tikkun Olam Makers 2019 , with the creation of a wheelchair-bicycle and an arm prosthesis .
In 48 hours, the students of the Center of Scientific and Technological Studies (CECyT) , made the arm prosthesis , which benefited Carlos Leobardo Taba Cedillo , from Mexico City.
The 17-year-old, who lacks the upper and lower limbs, was able to write and paint for the first time.
The students created the prosthesis using a 3D printer , and aluminum and velcro to make it more resistant and comfortable, the IPN said in a statement.
The students also designed a bicycle that can be adapted into the wheelchair of Taba Cedillo, to allow him greater mobility .
Five teams participated in the contest: Israelita de México, Webster, Hebrew Maguén David, Israelita de México-Hebreo, and CECyT.
The Mexican students agreed that the best part of the contest, organized by Tikkun Olam Makers , a n Israeli non-governmental organization , is the satisfaction of helping a large number of people, since their projects were shared on an internet platform, so they can be replicated worldwide .
