At least 90% of people, including men, from Santa Rosa de Lima , in San Blas Atempa , Oaxaca , make a living through embroidery .
After the September 7, 2017 earthquake , this community was severely affected. During the earthquake , Ofelia Salud and her daughter, Erendira Bailón lost their home but luckily, they were chosen by the Tejiendo Hermandad project (Weaving Sisterhood), led by the Melendre Committee , an organization that has been helping embroiderers since October 2017.
After the earthquake , Ofelia and Erendira didn't make any sales and barely have any money or food but things changed since their pieces are being sold through a digital platform.
Aurora Catalán, from the Tejiendo Hermandad project , explained that ai of the project was to finance 50 clothing items and an equal number of embroiderers in three communities located in the Isthmus : Juchitán, Unión Hidalgo, and Santa Rosa de Lima .
But thanks to donors in Mexico and abroad, they were able to finance 300 clothing items created by 60 artisans from five municipalities.
The project also donated 100 embroidery frames and 50 sets of embroidery tools.
After the crisis was over, the project has been looking to expand by creating a virtual market so that the embroiderers can sell their pieces. The platform is called Tianguis Virtual Zapoteca and was launched in February.
The project aims to help embroiderers and producers to obtain fair prices and sell their products themselves, with no intermediaries .
