As part of the 71 edition of the Cannes Film Festival, the section Cannes Classics – dedicated to screening restored “heritage films” – has included in this year's selection a jewel of the Golden Age of Mexican cinema.
" Enamorada " (1946) (“Enamoured") tells the love story between the headstrong daughter of an aristocrat (María Felix) and a military general of the Zapata army (Pedro Armendáriz) during the Mexican Revolution, a romantic comedy inspired by Shakespear's "The Taming of the Shrew".
This film is one of the masterpieces of prolific Mexican filmmaker, actor, and producer Emilio “El Indio” Fernández and marked his first collaboration with actress María Félix , with whom he would go on to work in four films more.
In 1950, Fernández directed the Hollywood remake of this film under the title “The Torch”, which saw Armendáriz reprise his role as the general but casting Paulette Goddard as the lead actress instead.
The film will be introduced at the Film Festival by U.S. filmmaker Martin Scorsese, in an event which will also feature masterpieces such Bergman's "The Seventh Seal" and Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey."
The 71 edition of the Cannes Film Festival will take place from May 8 to May 19.
