Five children from Tezontepec de Aldam a, a municipality in the state of Hidalgo , won the first three places in the 2019 Aloha Mental Arithmetic contest , which took place in Foshan, China.
In first place: Santiago Ángeles Cornejo and Eduardo Cornejo Cruz ; in second place, Kimberly Corina Cruz Aguilar and Francisco Zaid Pérez Martínez , and in third place, Carlos Abraham Hernández Cruz .
The children qualified for the international contest after winning the first places in a contest in Querétaro , where they solved 70 mathematical operations in less than five minutes .
In order for the children to travel to the competition, their families launched a campaign to raise funds and even went to the l ocal Congress in hopes of receiving support; nevertheless, they were able to raise the money through raffles .
Aloha Mental Arithmetic
is a mental development program for children between 5 and 14, as part of an effort to strengthen the teaching of arithmetic through mathematical operations and calculations , carried out against the clock.
The program looks to promote velocity, precision, analytic ability, and confidence among students .
