Mexican Chancellor Luis Videgaray has condemned the zero-tolerance policy of the United States which has separated thousands of children from their parents, describing it as “cruel and inhumane,” and has demanded the Donald Trump administration to desist from this practice.
During a press conference, the Minister of Foreign Affairs stated that Mexico hasn't ruled out appearing before international authorities to defend the rights of the minors , and clarified that out of the 1,995 cases reported by the United States, only 21 concern minors of Mexican nationality. The Minister added that out of those 21 minors, 7 have already been deported, 7 more have been reunited with a family member in the U.S., and the remaining 7 are currently at U.S. shelters.
According to the Mexican Minister, most of the minors in this situation come from the Central American countries of Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala.
“Minister Luis Videgaray has clarified that the Mexican Government doesn't endorse illegal migration yet emphasized the current administration will not remain indifferent on the face of such an inhumane situation as is the separation of migrant families, and has urged the U.S. government to reconsider this policy,” reads the Tweet of Mexico's Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
“The Mexican government works every day to build a relationship of mutual respect; we fully respect the sovereignty and rule of law of the United States, we do not endorse illegal migration yet we will not remain idle on the face of such a cruel and inhumane situation,” said Chancellor Videgaray on Tuesday.
