Mexico is the keeper of some magical beaches were tourists can delight in the phenomenon of bioluminescence , that is, the production and emission of light by thousands of living organisms.
Check out the five beaches in Mexico were seawater glows green or turquoise as soon as the sun goes down:
1. Holbox, Quintana Roo
This small island located in the north of the state of Quintana Roo is famous for its crystal clear waters and calm waves. The best time to watch the phenom is from May to September, when the waters glow in fluorescent blue.
2. Chacahua, Oaxaca
These waters glitter in hues of green, silver, and blue, and give a hypnotic look to the five lagoons of this national park, a classic backpacking destination. From August to May you have the opportunity not only to admire the glowing waters but also swim in them.
3. Xpicob, Campeche
This site is dedicated to the preservation of regional flora and fauna. From July to November you can participate in activities such as turtle hatching watching and enjoy night strolls along the beach. It's common to see fish shoals jumping out of the water and rays which, in their escape, leave behind a wake of light.
4. Lagoons of Manialtepec, Oaxaca
Located just 15 minutes from Puerto Escondido, this lagoon takes its visitors by surprise for its biological richness, protected by an exuberant mangrove forest. The bioluminescence phenomenon is a constant during the rainy season, reason why September is the ideal month to visit Manialtepec.
5. Bucerías, Nayarit
Bucerías is an ideal spot to relax and enjoy nature, as it is far away from the large hotel resorts of the Nayarit Riviera, 18 km from the Puerto Vallarta airport. The glowing waters here look like a meteor shower in the ocean, leaving a mark on the sandy beaches.
