Last week, the Mexican music group Bronco was presented with the Key to the City of Lynwood, California and a Mayan Star for their work in promoting the sounds of Northern Mexico and cumbias around the world .
Both the golden key and the plaque will be installed at Plaza Mexico , a multi-purpose cultural center in Lynwood.
The musicians were decorated by José Luis Solache, the mayor of Lynwood , in presence of more than 70 thousand citizens, 80% of which were of Latin origin.
“This type of award means that Bronco is still alive and galloping. We have not been forgotten after so many years,” said Guadalupe Esparza, singer and founder of Bronco , during a press conference.
“We are deeply honored,” added the 64-year-old musician upon receiving the tokens of appreciation at the La Huasteca restaurant in Plaza México.
Bronco was born in the state of Nuevo León in the late 1970s . On their first show, they were paid only 50 pesos. José Guadalupe Esparza, lead singer of Bronco, was then working as a mason’s helper and the other band members paid for their first record production with their own pockets. Now, they are one of the most legendary Grupero bands in Mexico .
With over 30 albums and a Grammy nomination in 2017 for the Best Music Video category, Bronco has given voice to the downtrodden both in Mexico and the U.S. “We have overcome many hardships through the years because we come from extremely poor communities,” Esparza commented.
“However, now we have keys to many cities in Texas, Nevada, Arizona, and now Lynwood, California,”
stated the music group founder.
“As mayor, it is my honor to give Bronco the keys to the city of Lynwood,” stated Solache.
