On Friday, Mexico's Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( SRE ) disclosed that a student of Mexican origin was among the 17 killed in a major school shooting at Florida high school .
“The Mexican government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, deeply regrets the death of a young Mexican during the tragic incident at Marjory Stoneman Douglas School in Parkland , Florida , and expresses its solidarity and heartfelt condolences to the relatives of the victim,” the statement reads.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs assured that it is in contact with the family providing both the assistance and protection required in this unfortunate situation.
“The Mexican government regrets the death of a young Mexican in Parkland, Florida,” the ministry wrote in Spanish on Twitter.
On Wednesday, February 14 , a 19-year-old gunman opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, killing 17 people before he was arrested by police.
The gunman was identified as Nikolas Cruz , who previously attended the school and was expelled for unspecified disciplinary reasons, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said hours later.
