North Korea's ambassador to Mexico
, Kim Hyong Gil , is still in Mexico because he has not been able to travel to Cuba .
On Thursday , September 7 , Mexico's Government expelled the Ambassador of North Korea in response to Pyongyang's latest nuclear test. President Enrique Peña Nieto instructed full compliance of the United Nations security resolutions and declared Kim Hyong Gil “ persona non grata ,” giving him 72 hours to leave the country, a deadline met on Sunday afternoon .
Sources from the North Korean embassy in Mexico said Kim Hyong Gil was not able to leave the country because flights to Cuba have not been restored after Hurricane Irma battered the island, therefore, he is expected to leave Mexico on Thursday or Friday.
According to Mexico's Government, the diplomat does not transgress his immigration status in the country, since he reported his departure by the end of this week.
Kim Hyong Gil received the instruction to move to Cuba to strengthen the North Korean embassy in that country.
Mexico’s Foreign Minister
, Luis Videgaray , has stressed that Mexico was not breaking diplomatic ties with North Korea, but that Mexico “wanted to send a clear message of absolute rejection” of the recent tests.
