Isaac Hernández and the English National Ballet to haunt Mexico with “Giselle”

Through a statement, Mexican ballet dancer Isaac Hernández informed that, as a preventive measure against the coronavirus pandemic, Akram Khan’s Giselle presentations with the English National Ballet in Mexico have been canceled .

“We have carefully considered, with deep awareness and reflection, the global emergency that affects everyone nowadays,” he said.

“In view of doubts, confusion, and lack of knowledge in the whole world over this disease, we must be informed and alert to preventive measures suggested by the corresponding authorities,” Hernández said referring to the alerts issued by the World Health Organization .

He also mentioned tickets refund will be done according to the order of purchase.

According to the critic, the renowned choreographer reinvents the romantic ballet and its story of love , treason , and redemption , and when the curtains rise, the dancers in the shadows push against a huge wall. Akram Khan’s “ Giselle ” stuns from that very moment with powerful images and fascinating choreographies.

Premiered in 2016 , this production has been presented in several international stages with the ENB and uses "ominous Gothic" music ( The Observer) by Vicenzo Lamagna , adapted from Adolph Adam’s original and performed by the English National Ballet Philarmonic .

The scenography and the costumes by the Academy Award-winning designer Tim Yip , and Mark Henderson’s atmospheric lighting evoke a condemned factory and the vengeful ghosts that appear among its shadows.

The ghost-filled ballet “ Giselle ” tells the story of a young peasant who, disappointed by her lover’s treason, loses her sanity and dies.

The ballet is inspired in the Germanic legend of Willis – spirits of young women who died dressed as brides before walking to the altar and who appear at midnight with the moonlight to weep and look for vengeance – and the poem “ Fantômes ” by Victor Hugo .
