The disappearance of 43 students from the Normal Rural School of Ayotzinapa, that took place on September 26, 2014, in Iguala , Guerrero , reflects the way in which brutality arrived and took over different regions in the country. The Ayotzinapa case, particularly, was thoroughly investigated, polemic and painful, which hasn't been forgotten by those affected. It's understandable.
This decomposition process in Mexico , Ayotzinapa is part of it, is the result of the voids created by authorities from all levels, it was created through the constant violations to the Rule of Law allowed by those responsible of enforcing the law. The complicity of several governments allowed organized crime to take root in everyday life until their atrocities turned into a new social contract.
How was it possible that a group of 43 students disappeared without the official investigation providing a forceful response? The answer revolves around the weakness of the justice system , which has been key to maintain the obscurity in this and many other tragic cases that have taken place in the country .
This Monday, Mexico's President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador , announced the creation of a Truth Commission , that has the purpose of uncovering what happened to the 43 missing students . This is a promise López Obrador made during his presidential campaign, and now it has been crystallized as one of his first government actions.
Resuming such a complex case as part of his first activities as President must be recognized as a show of sensibility from López Obrador towards the citizens' sentiment. It is necessary that the case is cleared since the official investigation and concussions generated doubts among a large part of society.
In fact, if the Ayotzinapa case is the reflection of the everyday brutality in our country, solving the case should be proof that tragedies can't take place without learning the truth about the events. Crime can't be normalized, as it has been the case. We're before a huge opportunity for the federal government to prove that the respect towards human rights is a priority for the government.
One of the government's main priorities is the pacification of the country. In order to achieve this purpose, it's necessary to banish brutality and justice has to work according to what is expected from the institutions that provide it. The challenge is huge but it's time to fight it.
