Mexico’s earthquake of September 2017 has revealed a structure within the Teopanzolco pyramid in the state of Morelos , which has completely changed archaeologists’ perspective on the site’s chronology.
Restoration efforts made in the pyramid’s interior led archaeologists from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) to discover an ancient structure dating from 1150 to 1200 . Before the discovery, it was believed that the pyramid had been built between the years 1200 and 1521, after the construction of the Great Temple of Tenochtitlan .
Bárbara Konieczna
, manager of the archaeological area, along with Georgia Yris Bravo , have presented the finding in company of Isabel Campos Goenaga , head of the INAH center in the state of Morelos .

Konieczna explained that, due to the humidity accumulation and the intensity of last year’s earthquake, the construction’s core was in very bad shape. She underlined that the finding came barely a century after the discovery of the Teopanzolco pyramid.
Although there is still restoration work to be made for the following weeks, the archaeological site will remain closed until the month of October , since the attendance of tourists could affect the pyramid’s stability.
