According to Dr. Gustavo Rojas Velasco , cardiologist at Mexico's National Institute of Cardiology , diabetes is a fast growing disease in the country. People who suffer from diabetes are four times more likely to develop cardiovascular complications, thus positioning it as a leading risk factor for developing a series of heart diseases such as acute myocardial infarction .
The specialist warned that in Mexico City , even though the population has a broader access to medical services, the vast majority of patients with diabetes lack effective glucose control.
Glycosylated hemoglobin
levels should be maintained below 7% in all diabetic patients in order to prevent the development of microvascular complications however, results over 10% indicate a higher risk for developing a heart condition, according to Rojas Velasco.
"Diabetes is a serious problem," assured the cardiologist, and he lamented that most of the people who suffer from this disease lack the proper treatment that may prevent several microvascular complications.
In the Senate, Dr. Gustavo Rojas Velasco participated in the Health Fair " Initiative to improve the care of acute myocardial infarction in Mexico ."
