The Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) in Boston, Massachusetts , will present around 140 works by Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide (1942) as part of an exhibition that will offer an historical account of Mexico since the 1970s .
The exhibition " El México de Graciela Iturbide " ( Graciela Iturbide’s Mexico ) is meant to show “the tensions that surface between rural and urban life, human presence and nature, indigenous and Spanish cultures” and will be displayed until May 22 , the museum said in a statement.
The exhibition is composed of works from the artist’s personal collection, which were acquired by the MFA from museums and private collections in the United States, Mexico, and France .
“The photographs of Graciela Iturbide not only bear witness to Mexican society but express an intense personal and poetic lyricism about her native country. One of the most influential photographers active in Latin America today, Iturbide captures everyday life and its cultures, rituals, and religions, while also raising questions about paradoxes and social injustice in Mexican society ,” reads the museum website .
For this occasion, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts has prepared an illustrated catalog with more than 100 black and white photo reproductions and essays about the Mexican artis t.
"I am excited to present the revolutionary images of Graciela to our global audience, and it has been a pleasure and an honor to work hand in hand with her in the preparation of this exhibition," said curator Kristen Gresh .
Iturbide Guerra, who has exhibited her work in various parts of the world, will participate on May 5 at a symposium on prominent photographers sponsored by the American cultural institution that presents the exhibition.
