The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Panama has informed that former Governor of Quintana Roo, Roberto Borge , will be extradited to Mexico on January 4, 2018, to face charges for money laundering, embezzlement, illicit enrichment, and unlawful exercise of public service.
The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed Borge will be handed over to Mexican authorities at 10:00 am as part of the extradition process.
The Mexican Office of the Attorney General ( PGR ) is preparing the aircraft that will be used to retrieve Borge, who is currently at the clandestine prison La Chirola, in Ancón, Panama .
Upon his arrival in Mexico City, the former Governor will be brought before a judge of the Federal Criminal Justice Center in the State of Mexico, located in the Neza Bordo prison, where the prison where Borge will be sent to continue the legal proceeding against him will be determined.
Last December 15, the President of Panama, Juan Carlos Varela, signed the extradition order, following the ruling of the Supreme Court of Justice on the lawful arrest of Borge.
Roberto Borge attempted to fly to Paris from Panama City in June 2017, after he was accused in Mexico for the alleged sale of Federal land at low costs and creating ghost corporations.
Pursuant to the justice system, the crimes Borge is accused do not require preventive custody; however, the PGR considers there are elements enough to justify the politician be imprisoned for the rest of the proceeding.
After his arrest by Panamanian authorities, Borge was sent to the Rehabilitation Center El Renacer, yet he was transferred to the clandestine prison of La Chirola after being considered a flight risk.
If found guilty , Roberto Borge could be sentenced to a maximum of 15 years in prison.
