In Mexico City , women are catcalled in the streets, in the public transport they are constantly harassed , in their own houses they are physically and psychologically violated , in some cases they are sexually assaulted and even murdered , according to the 2016 National Survey on the Dynamics of Household Relationships ( ENDIREH 2016 ) by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography ( Inegi ).
According to the survey, 79.8% of women , about 3 million have experienced at least one act of violence in their life. The aggression could be either emotional, physical, sexual, economic, or even discrimination, and it could be perpetrated by their sentimental partner, relatives, classmates, working partners, friends, figures of authority, acquaintances or even by mere strangers.
The survey highlights that aggressions are not isolated acts since women may have experienced one type or several types of aggression.
On an individual basis, sexual harassment , such as unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature represented 61.5% of the aggressions, while psychological abuse , characterized by a person subjecting, or exposing, another person to behavior that may result in psychological trauma represented 6.9% .
According to the Inegi, the most dangerous boroughs for women are Cuauhtémoc , Venustiano Carranza , Iztacalco , Gustavo A. Madero , and Álvaro Obregón .
In 2016, 61.9% of murdered cases with female victims were perpetrated in Álvaro Obregón, Iztapalapa, Cuauhtémoc and Gustavo A. Madero, yet only 1% of the cases were considered femicides .
