Thus far, 42 cases of murdered politicians have been recorded since September 2017, a fact which is a cause of concern given the political climate Mexico is going through because of the General Election to be held this July 1st.
The murders have taken place in 16 states of the Mexican Republic but the state with the most cases is Guerrero (12), followed by Oaxaca (8), and Jalisco (3) and Veracruz (3).
The victims – five of whom were women – belonged to the following political parties:
Center-right Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) – 13
Left Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) – 10
Conservative National Action Party (PAN) – 5
Left National Regeneration Party (MORENA) – 3
Center-left Citizen's Movement Party (MC) – 3
Employees of local governments – 3
Far-left Labor Party (PT) – 2
Conservative Social Encounter Party (PES) – 1
The Poor of Guerrero Party (local political party) – 1
Independent candidates – 1
The situation is particularly concerning in Guerrero due to the high number of murder cases recorded. The first happened on September 26, 2017, when Ángel Vergara Chamu, an aspiring candidate to the Mayor's office of San Miguel Totolapan was shot to death. The last case in the state was the double murder of aspiring candidates to the local Congress Antonia Jaimes Moctezuma and Dulce Anayely on December 21 and 26.
