The UNESCO World Heritage Committee will analyze next July the enlisting of the site comprised of the “protected islands and areas of the Gulf of California ,” in Mexico, to its list of World Heritage in Danger , informed the agency.
The situation of the site will be discussed during the annual meeting of the agency held in Krakow, Poland, from July 2 to 12.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization expressed its concern over the “illegal activities and fishing ” in the zone and its worry over other threats like “the state of conservation of two species, the tiny porpoise and the totoaba fish .”
The Gulf of California will be examined along with 4 sites from other countries to be included on the list, communicated the UNESCO in a report.
In addition, it will consider the nomination of 7 natural sites, 1 mixed property (cultural and natural), and 27 cultural sites in total.
