The first response that Emma Suarez gave laureate Mexican filmmaker Michel Franco when he invited her to “Las Hijas de Abril” (April's Daughters) was negative, because she wasn't acquainted with his movies; but when she read the script and after two days of thinking just for the sake of protocol, the word changed to yes to play a woman whose daughter is about to have a baby.
Already on the set, the Spanish actress of Pedro Almodovar 's “Julieta” faced two things: a real baby and driving in several scenes, activity which makes her very nervous, according to the actress herself.
Prior to all that, she experienced what she had never experienced before, living for several days with her fellow cast members, in a house, to get to know each other and to create a chemistry essential to the film. The Mexican director together with the production staff decided that only the actresses lived in that place, without interference from anyone else.
Emma can barely drive a car, but in the script, there were several scenes like in which she had to do so including one where she confronts her younger daughter.
“Las Hijas de Abril” won the Jury Prize at Cannes . The movie was filmed between November and December of last year and it's hitting theaters half a year later, its premiere is scheduled for June 23.
