Republican senator Richard Burr, president of the Senate Intelligence Committee, and Democrat Mark Warner, Vice Chairman of said Committee, had sent a letter to James Comey, who dismissed the previous invitation because he wanted to have a public and not a private hearing.
The petition was sent after The New York Times revealed evidence of a memo which shows, for the first time, “clear” efforts from President Donald Trump to obstruct the investigation opened by the FBI concerning the alleged links between his presidential campaign and Russia.
According to the information, last February Trump asked James Comey to put an end to the investigation on the links between the Kremlin and his former National Security Adviser, Michael T. Flynn.
The White House denied the facts presented by the journal and assured that Trump “never asked Mr. Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn.”
