In order to recognize the role of these cultural institutions within society, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) established on May 18, 1977, the International Museum Day.
Mexico City holds one of the largest numbers of museums in the world, only behind London. According to the local Secretary of Tourism, there are 170 museums and 43 galleries in the capital.
So today, when there is a global celebration of the International Museum Day, some institutions will carry out special activities. In addition to this, some will hold Night of Museums, so you can join the festivity without looking at the time.
1. Laboratorio Arte Alameda. The “Asombrosas Criaturas” (Awesome Creatures) from Dutch artist and physicist Theo Jansen will be open until today at 17:00 (Mexico Central Time) free of charge. Tomorrow, Friday 19, this museum will also show videos about the project “Primer Movimiento. Prácticas performativas sobre el cuidado y la percepción” (First Movement. 4. If you are brave enough, we advise you to go to “Brujas de la Inquisición” (“Witches from the Inquisition”) in the Museo de la Tortura. At 18:45 hrs a tram tour awaits you. (Tacuba 15, historic center, 06000 Cuauhtémoc)
