1.246 turtle eggs rescued in Tamaulipas

The Federal Attorney's Office for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) rescued 1.246 Atlantic ridley sea turtle eggs (Lepidochelys kempii), which came from 16 nests found in Bagdag beach in the city of Matamoros, Tamaulipas.

In an official statement, the PROFEPA informed that the nests were relocated inside the Advanced Naval Station facilities, which are part of the Mexican Secretariat of the Navy (SEMAR), so the process of incubation and hatching can proceed.

It also declared that the rescue and relocation of nests are established on the Official Mexican Standard (NOM) NOM-162-SEMARNAT-2012, which enunciates the specifications for protection, recuperation, and management of the sea turtle population in their nesting habitat. Besides, actions are done jointly with the SEMAR and National Committee of Protected Natural Areas (CONANP.)

The PROFEPA manifested that it will continue registering the turtle's arrival in Bagdag beach to nestle and lay eggs, and as a result, surveillance rounds will be continuous in order to keep track and guard them.

In Tamaulipas, the main nesting beaches are Aldama, Soto la Marina and Altamira.

The Atlantic ridley sea turtle eggs is listed in the NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010, under the category of Endangered Species (P.)
