Amidst the wave of fear, persecution and uncertainty surrounding the Latino community based in the U.S., Mexican actor, screen-writer and director, Eugenio Derbez, assures that the best “weapon” Latinos can resort to is hard work in a country with a population of over 56 million Hispanics.
Derbez, who was ranked as the most influential Hispanic person in 2014 by Variety, thinks that “many Latinos are reluctant to participate in protests for fear of being arrested or deported, this might not be the best way to resist the situation...violence is not a solution.”
Instead, he urges Latinos to demonstrate how valuable a labor force they represent for the U.S. on a daily basis: “The best weapon available for all of us (Latinos) is to show that no one, and I mean no one can replace our mettle, simply because no one is as hardworking as we are.”
“I see this admirable people work like crazy to carry their families forward...they deserve our respect and admiration”, he added.
Derbez also participates in a campaign that celebrates the legacy, resolve and personal history of Latino people who had gone to the U.S. to pursue their dreams, in the campaign add Derbez says: “I am one of them. My story goes like this: I am from Mexico and came to the U.S. in search for better opportunities. I am making my dream come true in Hollywood.”
