Mexican cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto has garnered his second Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography for Martin Scorsese's “Silence.”
The story is based on Shusaku Endo’s 1966 novel and is set in the 17th century when two Portuguese priests, Father Rodrigues and Father Garupe, travel to Japan to find their mentor, who disappeared and supposedly renounced his faith. The Japanese government, fearful of colonial powers, has outlawed Christianity, and the priests' mission is a dangerous one that shakes the idealistic Rodrigues to his core.
Prieto was also nominated for an Academy Award for Brokeback Mountain in 2005.
Rodrigo Prieto has worked with the very biggest names in filmmaking in the last two decades, such as Spike Lee (25th Hour), Curtis Hanson (8 Mile), Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain and Lust, Caution), Pedro Almodóvar (Broken Embraces), Alejandro González Iñárritu (Amores perros, 21 Grams, Babel and Biutiful) and with Martin Scorsese (Wolf of Wall Street and Silence).
